Cribb, which inspired Tolkien's maps of Middle Earth. In his last years, Morris wrote four prose romances, of which THE SUNDERING FLOOD was the last. He became so ill near the end that he had to dictate the final words of the work to Sir Sydney Carlyle Cockerell, on September 8, 1896. He died on October 3rd. His daughter, May Morris, oversaw the editing and printing; the book was finished on November 15, 1897 and issued in February 1898. [Peterson A51.]Morris's proto-fantasy novels profoundly influenced later, fellow Oxford writers, C.S. Lewis (THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA) and J.R.R. Tolkien (THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS), helping to pave the way for all modern epic/high fantasy authors. The spine and label are well-worn but intact. Corners bumped.
