From the author's introduction: "My purpose in this book has been to draw the Great Metropolis with its lights and shades, in a series of graphic papers: to sketch New York as I have seen it." Profusely illustrated with b&w plates after engravings. The author, Matthew Hale Smith (1810-1879) was the chaplain for the 12th Regiment, New York State Militia, stationed at Camp Anderson in Washington, DC.
