About The Book: The one-volume reference work details the history of the United States Supreme Court as well as the effect of its decisions on the executive and legislative branches of government.
Abstract: Part one of the book deals with nearly 200 years of the Court's history, with special emphasis on its origins and development. Part two focuses on the Court's role in the evolution of the Federal system of government, stressing the powers of the States and those of the Congress, the President, and the U.S. courts. Individual rights and the Court's role in interpreting them is discussed in part three, while part four analyzes external pressures influencing the Court. The day-to-day operations of the Court and their evolution are discussed in part five, and part six provides biographical data on all Supreme Court Justices. More than 400 of the Court's major decisions are summarized in part seven. The appendix includes a list of Supreme Court nominations, a glossary of legal terms, and a list of Acts of Congress held unconstitutional. t
