Founded by noted surfer and surfing filmmaker Walt Phillips and "The Godfather of Surfphotography" LeRoy Grannis in 1962, SI ceased publication in 1967. SI's editorial board reads like a Who's Who of North Shore surfing: Along with Phillips and Grannis there was designer and record album and poster illustrator John Van Hamersveld, Australian surfer and photographer Barbara Walton, Dr. Don James ("The Premier Photographer of Surfing") and surfing legend Lee Peterson. James' photos were especially notable for having been taken in the 1930's, when the sport was in its infancy in California. Tom Davies at Malibu cover photo. Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
