New York: Harper & Brothers, 1897. First edition. Collects eighteen short stories including the title one. INSCRIBED BY HALE on front endpaper TO FAMED NATURALIST CLINTON HART MERRIAM, "Dr. Merriam/ with the regards of/ E. E. Hale/ Please look at page/ 210. I understand that/ you have seen a traveler/ from those regions/ March 21/ 1900/ Washington." Beneath which is a PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION FROM MERRIAM TO HIS DAUGHTER, "Recd. From old Dr. Edward Everett Hale/ March 21, 1900, and passed on to my/ daughter Dorothy [Mrs. Henry D. Abbot]/ C. Hart Merriam." Page 210 begins the tall tale, "Colonel Ingham's Journey" (in which Ingham journeys to the North Pole, where he encounters his "Other Self"). 8vo dark pink cloth boards, silver-stamped spine; illustrated front cover stamped in silver and black; frontispiece and 2 full-page illustrations by W. T. Smedley; 416 pages. About very good with hinges cracked at front endpaper and rear blank but still holding; relatively light rubbing, including to the spine lettering which is still quite readable; offset from newspaper photo of Hale affixed to front pastedown shadowing portions of Hale's inscription (a little faded but still wholly readable); and clipped note in Hale's hand reading "p. 210 [underlined]/ Mark for/ Dr. Merriam" affixed to recto first blank with offset to opposing verso.
