Description:
Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1961. Original edition, later printing (?) (NAP but no FE statement). Hardcover. Fair/Fair. Oversize, 7 1/2 x 10 3/8. Drawings by Louise Fitzhugh. 4L. Sewn binding in pictorial boards, in dustjacket. I've rated this copy "Fair only" because there's cracking between the first and second signatures, and the first page has also pulled away from the text block where it's attached to the endpaper. However, the covers are in reasonably nice shape, with one bad scratch, a couple stains, and the laminate separating over the front gutter. Spine leans. Some smudges and grease-spots to pages, but no markings. Creasing to spine-ends. Unclipped dustjacket ("S.B. $2.50") has a lot of wear and tear, including two 2+" tears lower edge front panel, and some soil and toning.

A sweet little story about a hippie little girl and her parents and her friend Henry who is the opposite of Suzuki

Suzuki shares a pad with her poet father and sculptress mother.
Suzuki writes poetry too real crazy and has to go to school which is a drag.

Suzuki's classmate is Henry Martin, he takes Suzuki to his dancing
school man is that a scene. Suzuki and her boy friend Henry have further adventures and misunderstandings before they dig that people are really all alike only some are nuttier

SCOPPETTONE, Sandra. Suzuki Beane. Drawings by Louise Fitzhugh. Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, 1961. 4to, 96pp. Color pictorial boards. Pictorial endpapers; b&w illustrations on every page. Spine ends lightly rubbed, else a fine copy in original color pictorial dust jacket (slight soiling, small dampstain to front, light edgewear). Scarce.
First edition. The charming story of a hip, young, New York City girl named Suzuki Bean, the child of Greenwich Village beatniks, told in the first person in Suzuki's own beatnik vernacular. When Suzuki befriends a "real square" boy named Henry, they find that both his and her parents object to them being friends. So they decide to go "on the road" and start their own village "where a square and a swinging cat could swing in peace." Illustrated by the author of Harriet the Spy. A gem of a picture book that perfectly – and hilariously – captures the voice of the beatnik scene.
