Lacombe & Masquelier Paris 1789 - 1807. First Edition. Hardback. Very Good/No Jacket. A complete 4 volume set published 1789 - 1807. Vol 1 with frontispiece and a total 192 plates nearly all with 2 images, all with their original tissue guards, as called for. Vol 1"sous la direction de M Lacombe"vols 2-4 "sous la direction de L J Masquelier". Title of vol 2 with large horizontal closed tear, approx 6 plates with small closed tears, all pages edges untrimmed and margins a little toned and soiled, otherwise the plates are in excellent condition on quality paper. All soundly and uniformly bound in period French full crimson morocco gilt rolled borders of anthemions. All 4 bindings show some light wear and minor scuffing, vol 1 has short tear to leather at head of spine; vol 3 & 4 lower fore-edge corners crushed each with loss to one corner; all 4 vols with loss of leather at foot of all covers. Elephant Folio pages 56 x 38 cms Folio 61 x 43 cms. Matches description of British Library copy (shown as unique on World Cat) with OCLC 563929111Volume I pastedown inscribed in pencil manuscript, '4 vols original proofs before the letters, picked by the celebrated Denon'. Provenance: the Seymour family of Thrumpton Hall, near Nottingham.Originally issued in 48 parts with 4 plates each, a further 2 were issued in 1821 and are not present here.More photographs or a Whatsapp video available on request
