in the Strand, London: Printed by J. and W. Eddowes, for T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies, 1800. First English Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A beautiful rebound exemplar, with brown pebbly buckram cloth over boards, calf leather-backed, five blind-ruled bands to spine, gilt stamping to black leather label in one compartment. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound in hardcover format, generally clean, lightly toned at worst, minimal rubbing to extremities beyond scuffing to spine bottom and burnished there, and with five fleurs-de-lis. Small octavo format, mispagination between signatures K and L, and then four missing pages pp. 281-284. [4], 446, [2 pp. of advertisement]. This First English Edition compiled by Jonathan Scott comes chiefly from the Arabian Nights as collected and translated by himself, a prominent Orientalist, and was surprisingly popular. The Preface says "The following Tales are translated almost verbally from an Arabic fragment of the Thousand and One Nights, procured in Bengal, by my friend James Anderson, Esq.; who permitted me to take a copy of it."Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
