About This Item
First edition, the last of Crabbe's works to be published during his lifetime. Although passionately opposed to sentimentality, his use of the Augustan heroic couplet has a slightly jingling tone to the modern ear. He was, however, enormously popular in the nineteenth century, and widely respected by the Romantics, including Byron who described Crabbe as 'Though nature's sternest painter yet the best'.
