Complete in two volumes.A collection of Fontaine's famous fables, which were collected from a wide variety of both Western and Eastern sources. Fontaine adapted the fables into French free verse. Also containing a selection of Fontaine's longer works.Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, and forty plates.Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, and forty-three plates.Collated, complete.Jean de la Fontaine was best known for being a fabulist, and was one of the most popular and widely read French poets of his time, with his popularity still strong hundreds of years after his death.Illustrated by Charles-Dominique-Jospeh Eisen. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the spines and extremities. Some minor marks to the boards and spines. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and clean with just a few light spots. Very Good
