About This Item

Spring Green, WI: Printed and Sent to you by Gift of Charles Walters, [July 1941]. Folded broadsheet measuring 17" x 16.5".

A fresh example of the fourth installment of Wright's series of sporadically published manifestos, dedicated to the preservation of American democracy and economic autonomy; expressing animus towards fascism, communism, and all forms of empire.

Wright delivers a blistering Independence Day message summed up as follows: "Let this truth come through: Democracy is far stronger than Fascism or Communism or any other ism if allowed to work. The idea of absolute autonomy of a free man has created a power in this world mightier than anything that can be opposed to it!" He proceeds by laying out a political program designed to usher in the end of plutocracy and empire, the essence of which is the abandonment of consumerism and the reinvigoration of community life. This example, like another Taliesin Square Paper in our inventory, bears the address of Wright's client Edith Carlson. Carlson, a schoolteacher in Superior Wisconsin, commissioned Wright to design a house able to weather the snow and cold endemic to Superior's shores. "Below Zero," as the house was known, never saw completion, however the plans survived and were used to construct an Ann Arbor residence in 1979. A piece that says much about Wright's politics in its words and his aesthetics in its typography.
