Description:
Dublin: M. Rhames, 1743. Published 1743. The only book published by this Irish philosopher. The author describes the natural state of the human mind as generally good but ignorant and prone to vice unless it is educated and enlightened to cultivate a sense of religion and love of truth (this in an incredibly simplified synopsis of the author's propositions). Full calf with gilt-lettered red spine label, raised spine bands, [4], 15, [37], 344 pages. Covers edgeworn and joints weak, front cover held by binder's cords, text block sound with no loosened pages, pages clean with some age-toning and a fairly faint dampstain to the lower right hand area through most of the first half of the book, affecting only the lower three lines of text at the most, no chips or tears. . Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Paris: Vrille, 1952. NEAR FINE. No. 31 of 100 copy Limited Edition. 17 color engravings by French painter Ferdinand Springer. Printed on heavy Rives deckle-edged paper, in 4-page units, some gathered to 8-page signatures. Each color engraving protected with a loose tissue guard. Signatures are not bound, but gathered loose in a cream colored paper wrapper with embossed design and lettering on front panel. The wrapper is protected by a clear acetate overwrap; the book then laid loose into a folded 'hardcover' of gray boards with cloth hinges, all then inserted into a matching Slipcase. The wrapper has about 12 small brown spots or foxings; there is some tearing to paper on inside hinges of the 'hardcover' and light wear to cover corners. The slipcase, clean and intact, is lightly rubbed with small chips to paper covering at corners. All else Fine. A beautiful production featuring delicately rendered abstracts by the renowned French artist. Scarce. 7-3/4 x 11-1/8". Numbered Limited Edition. Wraps. Near Fine/Boxed. Illus. by Springer, Ferdinand.

New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1927. Book. Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First American Edition, third printing as noted on dust jacket. aka An Outline of Philosophy. The text block is solid, clean and square. Endpapers are clear of markings with NO previous owner's signature. Spine is stiff and appears unread, boards rigid and tips pointed.Just a bit of tanning on the endpapers. It is a beautiful copy! The dust jacket is NOT price clipped and has about a one inch loss at the upper right hand corner of the front cover with a though bit of shelf wear and tiny loss here and there on edges and at center cover and spine ends and at tips. Laid-in is an inscribed notecard by Alasdair MacIntyre to fellow Brandeis professor, Henry D. Aiken: "Henry / With love and regard / from Alasdair," with the Brandeis University name and emblem affixed to card. Fine in fine dust jacket.. A fine first edition of Alasdair MacIntyre's (b. 1929) Against the Self-Images of the Age: Essays on Ideology and Philosophy with tipped-in inscription to fellow Brandeis professor, Henry D. Aiken. In this work, the author of the 1981 groundbreaking work After Virtue offers a poignant critique of organized Christianity, Marxism, and psychoanalysis for their failure to express the forms of thought and action that constitute our contemporary social life, and argues that a greater understanding of our complex modern world can only be achieved by a more thorough inquiry into the philosophy of the social sciences.
