About This Item

Four pages of publisher adverts at rear. Scattered foxing, light dampstain one centimeter head of title not affecting text. Cowper was one of the most widely read English poets of his day, whose most characteristic work, as in `The Task' brought a new directness to 18th-century nature poetry. This long poem, written "to recommend rural ease and leisure," was an immediate success on its publication in 1785.
