About This Item

Shanghai China: Tatiana (Anichova) Perfilieva / Perfilieff, 1947. 1st Edition . No Binding. Very Good. Unprinted, Unattached Brown Paper Leaves 21 1/4" X 15 1/4", With Printed Label Attached To Front Leaf, And 12 Expressionist, Often Tortured Woodcuts Of Various Sizes Printed On Rice Paper, With Red Seal, Two Signed By The Artist In Pencil. Some Are Tipped On But Most Are Just Placed Loosely Between These Leaves. Nine Duplicates Are Also Present. Some Foxing On All Prints And A Few Light Creases To Some. A Similar Series, Containing Only The 12 Noted On The Title Page, Was Auctioned At Pba Under The Artist Name "Perfitieva" And With A Possibly Incorrect Biography; One Set Is Cataloged At The Victoria And Albert Museum. . Per An Internet Listing, The Artist Tatiana Perfilieva (Née Anichkova) Was Born On February 25, 1898, In Odessa, In The Family Of Evgeny Anichkov, The Well-Known Literary Critic And Scholar. After The Family Left Chaotic Revolutionary Russia, Tatiana Lived In The United States And Europe, While Her Father Settled In Belgrade. Having Reached Success As A Sculptor, Tatiana Abruptly Switched To Avant-Garde Painting. In Rome, She Avoided The Émigré Circles And At One Point Completely Disappeared, To Be Found Later Living With A Working Class Family In Naples And Raising Their Children. Upon Her Arrival In Shanghai In May 1938, The North-China Daily News Wrote: "Mrs. Tatiana E. Perfilieva, Wife Of Col. D. S. Perfilieff, And An Outstanding Sculptress, Has Recently Arrived In Shanghai. For The Past Few Years Mrs Perfilieva Resided In Italy And Jugoslavia. In New York Her Work Was Quickly Bought By Private Collectors, While Her Bust Of The Cardinal At Present Graces The Carnegie Museum. Having A Perfect Knowledge Of Many Foreign Languages, Mrs Perfilieva Is Also The Author Of A Novel Which Is At Present Being Translated From French Into English." In The 1940S, Perfilieva'S Illustrations Appeared In Russian-Language Books Published In Shanghai. She Lived At 321 Avenue Petain With Her Husband Dmitry Sergeevich Perfilieff And Daughter Varvara, Born In 1927 In Rome. The Artist And Her Family Remained Stateless "Former Russians" In Shanghai. Curiously, Perfilieva'S Emigrant Registration Card Gives Her Birth Year As 1908, Not 1898. The Details Of The Family'S Exit From China Are Unavailable, But In 1972 Tatiana Perfilieva Was Registered In Rome, Again. [Per A Record In The Uncurated Genealogical Website Ancestry, She Was Born In 1906 And Married To Vladimir Vladimirovich Christie,1904-1994, But This Is Likely Another Person As That Tatiana May Have Died In Monterey Ca In 1943].
