Washington: Government Printing Office, 1890. Scarce first edition of the author's first book, Bureau of Education Circular of Information No. 3, 1980. Starting from Colonial times, including elementary schools, Harvard, Yale, William and Mary, U of Pennsylvania, the self-taught; substatial sections on the influx of English and French mathematics, with sections on major individual institutions. An important historian of mathematics, Swiss-born Cajori was educated at the University of Wisconsin and taught at Tulane and Colorado College. Paperback, grey wraps, black titling. Front cover creased & torn, rubbed; spine chipped & torn; rear cover missing entirely; partial institutional label on spine, ink number & pencil "Dup" on front cover - no other marks noted; front page soiled at upper edge with a short tear & light crease. Text clean; 400 pages.. First American Edition. Paperback. Fair. 5¾" by 9".
