About This Item

London: William Heinemann, 1926. 1/4 Vellum. Very Good. Arthur Rackham. The 1926 signed/limited. 520 copies issued by William Heinemann and signed by the illustrator Arthur Rackham (the first 260 intended for the British audience, the second 260 copies intended for The States). THIS, COPY #41, IS SIGNED BY ARTHUR RACKHAM at the limitation. A solid copy to boot. Tight and VG in its vellum-backed cream boards, with bright gilt-insignia and titling along the front panel and spine. Light staining at the foot of the spine, which bleeds just a bit onto the lower-edges of the first dozen or so pages. Thick quarto, top-edge gilt, deckled fore and bottom-edges. A number of pages uncut, all of Rackham's 21 tipped-in, full-page plates in pristine condition.

Synopsis

The Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s last solo-written plays. This tragedy tells the story of an exiled ruler who uses magic to restore his daughter to power and argues that the powerful must show mercy. First performed in 1611,  The Tempest  has been put to varied interpretations, from those that see it as a fable of art and creation, with Prospero representing Shakespeare, and Prospero's renunciation of magic signaling Shakespeare's farewell to the stage, to interpretations that consider it an allegory of Europeans colonizing foreign lands. O wonder! How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world That has such people in ’t! (V.i.)
