About This Item

London; H. S. Nichols, 1895., 1895. Hard Cover. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Octavo, pp. vii, [5], 360. Illustrated with 9 black and white plates after S. Gorski as called for. Bound in publisher's midnight blue cloth over boards elaborately blocked in gilt, gilt spine decoration and titles. Spine slightly sunned with minor wear to tips, a few small dents to lower board. Light scattered foxing to some leaves else clean and free of annotations and inscriptions. A Very Good copy. Flaubert's fantastical literary portrayal covering a night of carnal temptations of St. Antony. The book greatly influenced an adolescent Sigmund Freud, as well as inspiring countless artworks on the subject. Attractively bound in the publisher's trade binding, with erotic gilt blocked illustration to upper board.
