About This Item
New York: The Home Journal, 1849. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Six weekly newspapers, all folded naturally into quarters, never bound, condition varies, good to very good. Issues are January 1, 6 (two copies), 13, 27 and February 3. An example of the early fiction of this prolific author, famous for being the first woman to write a detective novel. According to Wikisource Women of the Century: The serial, "The Tempter," a sequel to "The Wandering Jew," published in the " Home Journal," created a derided literary sensation, and the identity of the writer was then first established. Home Journal editor N. P. Willis is said to have paid Fuller only in excessive praise, but otherwise not a penny. Here, in all, are five installments of this work, of a possible six (Jan. 21 not present; Jan 1 Feb. 3 appears to be the final installment, there being none in the Feb. 10 issue, not included here. Jan. 1 may or may not be the first installment, was unable to find the text of this work anywhere online --- a very rare text indeed!)
