About This Item

London: Longman, 1959 Gavin Maxwell first went to Sicily in 1953 to try to discover the truth about the life and mysterious death of the outlaw Salvatore Giuliano, and, in his own words, "became horrified and fascinated by Western Sicily". From then until 1957 he spent several months of each year in the poverty-stricken north-west of the island, and formed the conclusion that Sicily's fantastically high crime rate had in true roots in a degree of destitution and oppression not easy for a northern European to understand. Mr Maxwell set out to collect a series of autobiographics typical of the men, women and children among whom he lived, ranging from the priest to the prostitute, from the cowherd to the carabinière, stories told in their own words; and it is these moving human documents that make up dhe bulk of the book. ---------- Orders over $100.00 are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
