About This Item
In 1812 a twelve year old girl, Mary Anning, discovered the outline of a lizard-like skeleton in the limestone cliffs of Dorset which attracted the attention of William Buckland who used that find and other remnant fossils to try and understand the world before Noah's flood. Meanwhile another naturalist, Gideon Mantell discovered giant fossil bones in a Sussex quarry and came to realize the ancient past must have teemed with creatures of great size. Despite their efforts it was Richard Owen who claimed the credit for the discovery of dinosaurs. 374 pages with approx 40 black and white illustrations throughout. Book and dust jacket in near fine condition.
