Very good, 3rd reprint of 1st edition (1930), no d/j, marbled boards, with spine calf binding (chipped and bumped), gilt spine titling bright, text block firm, untrimmed pages tight and unmarked. Owner's plate on front pastedown.. 8vo: crown (200 x 140 / 8"" x 5_""). Robert Bridges (1844-1930) was a physician until illness forced him to retire, after which he dedicated himself to writing. He sought to 'free' verse through basing verse and metre on syllables rather than accents, a pattern he developed in Testament of Beauty (1929) for which he was appointed to the Order of Merit). He became Poet Laureate in 1913. Edition has photogravure portrait frontispiece
