About This Item

London: Clarendon Press, 1930. Leather. Very Good. 8.5" by 7". None. A lovely quarter vellum bound large paper edition of The Testament of Beauty A Poem in Four Books by Robert Bridges, Poet Laureate. With a photogravure portrait of Bridges to frontispiece. With a publisher's note on the text bound in to rear. Robert Seymour Bridges, OM, (1844 - 1930) was a British poet, and poet laureate from 1913 to 1930. Despite being made poet laureate in 1913, Bridges was never a very well known poet and only achieved his great popularity shortly before his death with The Testament of Beauty. However, his verse evoked response in many great British composers of the time. Among those to set his poems to music were Hubert Parry, Gustav Holst, and later Gerald Finzi. Two previous owner's ink inscriptions to front free endpaper. In a quarter vellum binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, smart but with slight wear to extremities and the occasional mark. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean throughout but with slight spotting and marks to endpapers. Very Good
