About This Item

London: Macmillan & Co. Ltd, 1947. Hardback. Very Good. Eighth impression. 8vo, pp. xi, (1), 442 + colour frontispiece portrait of Holtby. Blue buckram, spine lettered in gilt in green oval panel. Slight lean to spine, pushing to heel of spine. Edges, front and rear spotted and foxed, spine cracked in two places, but binding holding firm. Two newspaper clippings laid in (one by Shirley Williams about her mother, and the second a review of Marion Shaw's 1999 biography of Holtby). Else, clean and bright. In the original dust jacket: spine darkened, creased, nicked and chipped, closed tears with amateur taping to reverse. A sturdy copy of Brittain's memoir of her close friend. Very good/ good+ Finding guidance in Mrs Gaskell's approach to writing the life of her close friend Charlotte Bront, Brittain also notes another intention of her book: "I hope that Winifred's story may do something to destroy these tarnished interpretations [of friendships of women], and show its readers that loyalty and affection between women is a noble relationship". Brittain handled Holtby's literary estate following her tragic early death in 1935.
