[Frankfurt:]: [Johann Ludwig Gottfried,], [1655].. 8.75 x 13.5 inches leaf. 7.25 x 6.5 inches engraving.. Single leaf from the 1655 German edition of New Welt und Americanische Historien a condensed edition of Theodore de Brys series of voyages. Leaf 133/134. Large engraving depicts the macabre torment of the devil in various guises to the Tupi people of Brazil. In the background a group of Europeans are attempting to convert the indigenous peoples to Christianity. A dark impression with a few very small worm holes to outer corner and one very small one at left corner of engraving no affect. Printers crease at top and a crease where the book margin folds no afffect. Would be most suitable for framing. A scarce engraving. A newer engraving than de BryÕs original ÒHow the Indians believed the devil tormented themÓ this one is more detailed and a striking composition, being in the condensed version of his voyages. Theodore de Bry, a German engraver and book dealer, began a compilation of early voyages in 1590 and had published six parts at the time of his death in 1598. His widow, two sons, and another family member continued the work, which comprised a total of fifty-four parts when it was completed in 1630. Les Grandes Voyages and Les Petits Voyages (Large and Small Voyages). The Grandes Voyages, an illustrated collection of the Americas was very well received and was published in German, Latin, English and French to reach all readers. Newe Welt vnd americanische Historien is the second edition of an abridgement of the German text of the Grands Voyages.
