A penniless Bolshevik spy bullies him into buying a gaudy painting by an upstart named Matisse, a buxom widow makes forward advances at him under his fiancee's nose, and he's almost lynched when the Prime Minister, Lloyd George, picks him to make a speech denouncing the British Chief of Staff. Instead he's sent off to the trenches of France - to join a freewheeling bicycle brigade with unorthodox methods of killing Germans and staying in high spirits. Bandy is also subjected to a number of other horrors: an evening in a Dublin pub with a band of Irish rebels, a fox-hunt where, under Bandy's inspired directions, the hounds end up in his host's house, an unforgettable honeymoon in a Scottish castle, and an English country fair that could have been directed by Mack Sennett."
