Thirty-five Years in the East: Adventures, discoveries, experiments, and historical sketches, relating to the Punjab and Cashmere; in connection with medicine, botany, pharmacy, etc. by Honigberger, John Martin - 1905

Calcutta: Published by the "Bangabasi" Office, 1905. A scarce 19th century European view of India, notable for its reports on drugs. One of the plates depicts three types of drug use: a b'hangee, or hemp-plant drinker; a chursee bhistee, or a person smoking cannabis resin; and a faqueer postee, an opium "poppy-head drinker."

This is the first Indian edition (the book was originally published in two volumes in German in 1851 and in English, in London, in 1852). The publisher's notice at the front explains that this edition omits the second volume, which was primarily medical and by the early 20th century, outdated. xxx, 214 pages, plus sixteen plates (seven folding), including a frontispiece portrait of the author and a map.

Honigberger was a Transylvanian physician who arrived in Lahore, India, in 1829 and spent several decades there as a court physician to the Maharajah Ranjit Singh. His book is part travelogue, part cultural history. Very good in later plain paper boards with a cloth spine.
