Hard cover in very good condition with rust colored boards, deep maroon spine cloth, and copper gilt spine lettering. Front end papers contain ""Map of the United States of North America with the British, French and Spanish Dominions adjoining according to the Treaty of 1783."" Rear end papers contain ""A Map of the most inhabited part of Virginia, containing the whole Province of Maryland with part of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and North Carolina."" Frontispiece and jacket front panel contains portrait by Rembrandt Peale of Jefferson in 1800 when 57 years old. Interior text block clean & tight; no writings, no markings noted. Text block edges toned with light foxing to top text block. Contains 4 leaves/eight pages of glossy black & white photographs, the first of which has a 2 1/2"" closed tear at top, 1"" in from top corner; no loss of paper to the photos. 487 numbered pages. Dust jacket very good with shelf & edge wear, wrinkles to head & heel of spine, rubbing to fold lines and corners. * From the author: ""It is the major premise of this book that the story of Thomas Jefferson in American history is a strange case of mistaken identity resulting in part from willful misrepresentation but even more from the wishful thinking of both admirers and detractors.""
