Author not stated but [Edward Detraz Bettens.] NY: 1909. 1st edition. One of 250 copies printed at The Gillis Press for private distribution. Fine leather binding by Stikeman. A memorial biography of Thomas Simms Bettens (1851-1907), an 1874 Harvard graduate who taught the classics to generations of prep school students in NY City. Published as a gift to former students who donated a drinking fountain in Bettens' name for the Harvard Union entrance hall. 132 pp. + added leaves in the front and rear. Well-illustrated with portraits, including wonderful images of Bettens family dogs. 8vo, 8.75 by 6 inches. Full leather binding signed on the front endpaper with the small stamp of Stikeman & Co. Raised spine bands; gilt title lettering and 1909 date. Gilt top page edge. Leather panel inner doublures. Silk moire endpapers. Printed on thick, hand-made Imperial Japan vellum paper. VG with modest wear and rubbing, some darkening of the leather. Sound, tight binding. No owner signatures, bookplates or other marks.
