About This Item

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1952. Jaffa's first book, a scholarly study of Aquinas's Commentary on Aristotle's Nichomachean Ethics. Jaffa asserts that since Aristotle was Aquinas's authority for "all matters knowable by reason unassisted by divine revelation", examinations of Neo-Thomist doctrine must start with Aristotle's Ethics; he also compares differences in their analyses of moral phenomena and "criticizes Thomas' technique as a commentator". Jaffa, also a scholar on Abraham Lincoln's ideas, was influential in the modern American conservative movement, emphasizing the importance of natural rights over relativism and the relation between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution; he wrote Barry Goldwater's famous "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice" line. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book, minor edge bumps; delicate jacket chipped & tanned, with some tears & creases; endsheets tanned. Text clean; viii, 230 pages; index, bibliography, notes.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. Octavo.
