Kuniczak (1930 - 2000) relates the first 1000 hours in World War II as the small Polish army fought German invasion. In a sense this is the Polish "War and Peace of World War II". Based on much research. Story of an old soldier --- the one-armed Janusz Prus, General of Brigade --- fights a new verion of warfare while beset by concurrent distractions from his young mistress, Lala, who is having an affair with an American correspondent during the siege of Warsaw: It is "One endless period, a nightmarish day of a thousand hours" as occured, from mobilization to surrender,in life in the woods, fields, village streets; and the bombing of Warsaw in which Lala is killed. Philosophical complexities densely packed within a thousand hours.
