New York: Fowlers and Wells, 1851. Paperback. Good. 132, [8] p.; 20 cm. Tan wrapper printed in black. "Mail Edition" -- at top edge of front wrapper. Spine title: Lectures on Hygiene and Hydropathy. Back wrapper bears advertisement for The Water-Cure Journal and Herald of Reform published by Fowlers and Wells. Eight unpaginated pages following text contain: a publisher's advertisement for Bulwer and Forbes on the Water Treatment, edted with additional matter by Roland S. Houghton -- the advertisement for The Water-Cure Journal -- a publisher's catalog. Contents: Preface -- Constitution -- List of Officers -- Address at the Hydropathic Convention -- Hygiene the True Moral of the Cholera -- Hydrotherapy Rational, and Not Empirical. The author, the Rev. Roland Stebbins Houghton (1824-1876), was a friend of Edgar Allan Poe, who dedicated two poems to Houghton's wife, Marie Louise Shew Houghton. She had previously been married to Dr. Joel T. Shew (1816-1855), an early advocate of hydropathy in the United States. In Good Condition: minor loss at ends of spine; lower corners creased; old dampstain on front wrapper and faintly throughout; light foxing; otherwise, clean and solid. Scarce.
