Original gray decorated cloth, soiled, rubbed, liquid stain to upper board,some water staining of endpapers and publisher's advertisements, 36 pages publisher's advertisements dated September 1889 at back. First edition of this collection. "The Melancholy Hussar" was originally printed in the "Bristol Times" and then syndicated with the "Newspaper Fiction Bureau," this is its first book appearance. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed on the blank: "Lady Seton- With one of the writers' love." Not in Hardy's hand, probably that of Mrs. Alexander although we have been able to locate any samples of her hand. Purdy p. 82
