Three 3.75" x 5" photos by Alice Mertens, Cape Town, South Africa. Each photo has her stamp on the verso and a handwritten description in pencil. They date from around the 1950s.
Mertens (1915-2001) was a professional photographer and lectured at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. She was also a journalist in Cape Town, and she wrote eleven
books, in which she used photos she took of the indigenous people of South Africa. Her photos can be found in several museums.
The photos are in good overall condition.
