About This Item
The Fountain Press and the Cayme Press, New York and London., 1930. First edition. Quarto. pp [viii], 35. Four colour plates by William H. Cotton. One of 542 numbered copies. Publishers' binding of quarter red calf with black cloth boards lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. Printed by D.B. Updike at the Merrymount Press, Boston. A dramatisation by the author of his story The Three Strangers. An earlier version had been privately printed in an edition of six copies for copyright purposes in New York in 1893. The author revised the dramatisation in 1926.This copy is from the library at Max Gate, Thomas Hardy's Dorchester home: on the front free endpaper is the ownership inscription of one J.G. Crawford of Tring, beneath which he has written, ''Bought at the sale of Thomas Hardy's Library at auction rooms of Messrs Hodgson & Co, 115 Chancery Lane, May 26th 1938 (Part lot 90)''. Thomas Hardy died in 1928, so the book was no doubt sent to his widow by the publishers.Sporadic light foxing. Head and tail of spine slightly scuffed. Very good. No dustwrapper.
