Walter Herries (or Harris) was a pamphleteer who participated in the first Darien "adventure." Upon his return to England, he was offered inducements by English politicians to write a book that would ruin the reputation of the members of the Darien Company. His book was "Declared by a royal proclamation to be a 'false, scandalous, and traitorous libel'."

This book, attributed to Ridpath, is an answer to Herries's book, and an attack on English politicians. Ridpath was a Scottish journalist who wrote and supported Whig interests against the Tories.

The first of five books in a series by the author "of sketches of village scenes and vividly drawn characters was based upon life in (the village of) Three Mile Cross" where she lived near Berkshire, England. Her Wikipedia biography describes "Her writing has all the charm of unaffected spontaneous humour, combined with quick wit and literary skill." Rubbed gray and brown marbled boards with leather corners and leather extended spine. Backstrip of spine is missing and has been replaced with paper strip with typed title which is peeling from front cover. LONDON : John White, 1807 A very good copy of Rousseau's Letters translated and explained by Professor Thomas Martyn, 7th corrected and improved edition bound with Thirty-Eight plates, also by Thomas Martyn, 1794. In newer half leather binding with title label to spine and marbled boards. Page edges marbled. Letters is 503 pp plus index sections, with folding table outlining Linnaeus' system. The Thiry-Eight plates, a complete work in itself with separate title page, but prepared to link with the Letters, is 72 pp with 38 beautiful hand coloured plates by Nodder. The binding is in very good condition with a little scuffing to the spine. The contents are generally in very good condition with nice clean text pages. The plates are clean and brightly coloured. There is a small stain which affects the bottom left hand corner of plates 36-8, not affecting images.

Moisture marks to front cover. Particulars in gilt to spine, which is severely lacking the fabric. Bookplate removed from front pastedown. Odd pagination with corrections in pen to pages 161-163. Text block separated at page 258/259. ; xiii, 418 pages.

This is a scarce, very early Charles Dickens book that was published when he was only 25 years old. "PUBLIC LIFE OF MR. TULRUMBLE, ONCE MAYOR OF MUDFOG" by Boz ("Boz" was the pen name of Dickens). 1837; Carey, Lea and Blanchard; Philadelphia. The book contains "Other Tales and Sketches, from Bentley's Miscellany, and the Library of Fiction" including a story by James Fenimore (spelled "Fennimore" on the contents page) Cooper titled "An Evening of Visits." This is one of the first stories by Dickens published in book form in the United States.Condition:Worn corners (the tips of the boards are exposed); 1/2" cloth tears at the top edge of the spine, small cloth tears at the bottom edge.
