London: Constable & Co.. Very Good- with no dust jacket. 1927. First Edition. Original green cloth with blindstamped green lettering on spine and front . cover. "Through Jade Gate to Rome: A Study of the Silk Routes during the Later Han Dynasty" is a book written by Mildred Cable and Francesca French, two pioneering British missionaries and authors. The book was published in 1936 and focuses on the historical and cultural aspects of the Silk Road during the Later Han Dynasty in China. Mildred Cable and Francesca French were British missionaries who traveled extensively in China during the early 20th century. They dedicated themselves to serving remote and challenging areas, including the Gobi Desert and regions along the Silk Road. "Through Jade Gate to Rome" documents their exploration of the Silk Road and their efforts to study the ancient trade routes during the Later Han Dynasty (25-220 CE). The book combines their firsthand experiences, observations, and research with historical records and archaeological findings to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Silk Road's historical significance. The authors delve into the rich history, culture, and economic activities along the Silk Road, shedding light on the exchanges between East and West during this period. They explore topics such as the movement of goods, cultural diffusion, religious beliefs, and the interaction between different civilizations. Cable and French's travelogue captures the challenges and adventures they faced during their journey, including encounters with local communities, nomadic tribes, and the diverse landscapes of the Silk Road. Their vivid descriptions and personal anecdotes provide readers with a sense of the cultural and historical context of the Silk Road. "Through Jade Gate to Rome" remains an important resource for scholars, historians, and enthusiasts interested in the history, culture, and significance of the Silk Road. It showcases the remarkable achievements of two female travelers in a time when such endeavors were uncommon for women. Cable and French's book not only contributes to the understanding of the Silk Road but also reflects their broader mission as missionaries, combining their faith with their passion for exploration, education, and cultural exchange. Their work stands as a testament to their dedication, curiosity, and cross-cultural engagement during a transformative period in Chinese and world history. John Stuart Holden, also known as J. Stuart Holden, was a British Christian preacher and author who was associated with the China Inland Mission (CIM) , a Protestant mission organization founded by James Hudson Taylor. Holden was born on December 23, 1868, in Manchester, England. He studied at Cambridge University and later became a prominent preacher, lecturer, and author. He was known for his passionate and engaging style of preaching and was popular as a revivalist speaker in both Britain and the United States. Holden's association with the China Inland Mission began in the early 1900s when he was invited by Hudson Taylor to speak at the mission's conference in China. Impressed by the work and dedication of the missionaries, Holden became an advocate for the CIM and its efforts to spread Christianity in China. While not a formal missionary himself, Holden used his speaking engagements and writing to support and promote the work of the China Inland Mission. He spoke at various conferences, churches, and gatherings, sharing stories and testimonies of the missionaries and encouraging others to support their mission. Holden authored several books on spiritual and religious topics, including "The Power of Pentecost" (1913) and "Grace Abounding" (1927) , which explored themes of faith, spiritual growth, and the power of God's grace. His writings often emphasized the importance of a personal relationship with God and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. Holden's association with the China Inland Mission contributed to raising awareness and support for the organization's work. He played a role in inspiring individuals and churches to contribute financially, pray, and even consider becoming missionaries themselves. It is worth noting that the China Inland Mission, now known as OMF International (Overseas Missionary Fellowship) , was established in 1865 and focused on sharing the Christian message with the people of China. The mission emphasized cultural sensitivity, adopting Chinese customs and language in their work, and sought to reach out to the inland regions of China, where Western influence was limited. Overall, John Stuart Holden's association with the China Inland Mission and his efforts to support its work played a role in raising awareness and support for the mission's activities. Through his preaching, writing, and advocacy, he contributed to the broader mission of spreading Christianity and supporting the work of missionaries in China during the early 20th century. ; With frontispiece & all plates present as called for and with folded map (with one closed tear, with sharp folds and only a few minor spots of foxing).
