About This Item

Nicely done-up by the publisher in green cloth with red and black embossed characters and titles, octavo, pp. xiii, 235 + [1]. Endpapers illustrated in color with characters from the story. Color frontispiece of Alice with Humpty Dumpty and 15 more full-page color illustrations, as well as black and white vignettes by Sir John Tenniel. Color-illustrated dust jacket is price-clipped. Jacket now in a protective sheet of mylar. "In this sequel to Alice in Wonderland, Alice goes through the mirror to find a strange world where curious adventures await her." Of interest concerning selection of Humpty Dumpty as the frontispiece, the fearful Jabberwock (facing page [24]) was originally intended as the frontis until Dodgson himself became concerned it would frighten his young readers, writing in an 1871 letter that it was "likely to alarm nervous and imaginative children . . . and that we had better begin the book with a pleasanter subject." (See Hudson, Lewis Carroll: An illustrated biography, New York, 1977, page 153.)
