Hard cover, 12mo., in full red lambskin over boards, with central Doubleday Page monogram title vignette blocked in gold to front, with festoon and title in gold to spine, brown and white publisher's monogram paste downs, an introduction from the Author extolling the virtues of the readily available "cheap editions" of the classics of literature, 276 pp. including handy author's Index, plus 2 pp. publisher's series advertisement. **CONDITION: Slightly rubbed rear board, some scuffs to spine. Inside is clean, firm and hinges in order. Orig. owner's signature to prelim, dated Oct. 1926. **Famed Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Conan Doyle's 1907 essay on the benefits to be gained from reading, giving advice on what he considers the best of the best from history and literature, and why the young person should pursue the pleasures of a good book. He discusses his own library, some favorites amongst which include Macaulay's Essays and Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe.
