About This Item

Dust Jacket: Blemishes - Toning on the jacket edges caused by long term light exposure during prolonged storage. Minor chips and occasional small tears on jacket edges (photo).

Book: Blemishes - Light uniform toning of the pages, consistent with a book over 60-years old.

The remainder of the book is pristine. Stamped gilt lettering on the spine is bright and unblemished. Clothbound boards are unblemished. The spine and board junction is undamaged and the book is not cocked, the book lies flat, plumb and square.

Author Signature: Signed and dated by author in black ink script on the first free endpaper (photo). The named recepient is indisputably the author's boss and a fellow academic at CCNY :

GOTTSCHALL, MORTON (1894–1968), U.S. university teacher and administrator. Gottschall was born in New York. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1914, and became a tutor in history there. In 1919 he was named recorder of City College, a post he held for 15 years. During this period he also taught history and legal philosophy. In 1934 Gottschall was appointed professor and dean of the college, a capacity in which he served until his retirement in 1964. As dean, he was known for his consideration for the individual student. He was head of a large college whose enrollment was mostly Jewish and with whose needs and aspirations he deeply sympathized.

The jacket is completely intact and in remarkable condition given its age. Front panel is unclipped and original retail price is displayed (photo). A complimentary protective Mylar cover has been expertly installed to allow the buyer to handle with no fear of causing further damage.

From the book: "Professor Magalaner (a Joyce expert) traces the development in technique of several of Joyce's short stories from early to final published version and discusses the successive drafts of A Portrait onf the Artist as a young Man. In this way, Time of Apprenticeship serves as an etremely useful complement to recentpublications on Joyce's early life."

Reflective of a comprehensive scholarly and academic study, the book comprises a Preface, Table on Contents, 5 Chapters, 3 Appendices, Notes, and Index.
