London; Readers Library Publishing Company, [1925]., 1925. Hard Cover. First edition thus. Duodecimo, pp. 253, [1]. Undated, but circa 1925. Bound in Publishers' maroon cloth with gilt titles and gilt foliate borders to spine and upper board. In the original striking unclipped pictorial dust-jacket, with advertisements to flaps. Cover cloth very slightly rubbed and a little toned to spine tips. Text block is solid and tight. Jacket edge-rubbed with small loss head of spine and corners and 20mm from upper panel, with associated creasing but clean and bright. Early English edition of Wells' hugely influential science fiction classic. With the original striking dust-jacket by A. K. Merrin depicting a hoard of ghoulish Morlocks swarming the Time Traveller. First published in 1895 early editions of The Time Machine are difficult to find. Scarce in jacket.
Synopsis
The Time Machine is a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells, first published in 1895 and later directly adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It indirectly inspired many more works of fiction in all media. This 32,000 word novella is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively.
