About This Item

1519 LIVY History of Rome Gladiators Hannibal Punic Wars ALDINE Post Incunable

"Men of outstanding ability are more likely to lack the power of controlling their own people than of defeating an enemy in battle."

― Livy, The History of Rome

Few works on the history of Rome are as important and impactful as Livy's 'Ab Urbe Condita' or 'Histories'. Livy began working on this work at the end of the 1st-century BC and covers the earliest times and the foundation of Rome through the reign of Caesar Augustus.

While any edition of Livy is desirable, this particular volume from the 1519 post-incunable edition is considered to be one of the most desirable and valuable early edition of Livy. The famed Venetian printer Aldus Manutius published this edition which was edited by Giovanni Francesco Torresani. Aldus published this work in five distinct parts from 1518 through 1533, this tome being the third of the series. Notable topics covered in this volume include:

· The spectacle of Roman gladiators

· The military delegations of Hannibal, Carthage conquests of Rome in the Punic Wars

· Influence of Scipio Africanus during the Second Punic War

· Pyrrhus, King of Epirus and the Battle of Argis
