Oxford: Blackwell, 1927. Limited edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Watson, A.H.. #28 of 260, specially bound in heavy, beveled full cream cloth with a pictorial cover stamped in gilt. Signed by the author on the limitation page. 8vo. Collection of classic fairy tales as told by the poet, with four color plates and 22 b&w plates by A.H. Watson. Stories include Cinderella, Rumpelstiltskin, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel...19 in all.
Top edge gilt, pages untrimmed, light soiling to white cloth and cracking to front hinge with a hint of toning to endpapers, still a very good or better copy. Small, delicate pencil gift inscription to ffep.
Watson is a oft-neglected female illustrator who came along late in the Golden Age of Illustration but was a prolific illustrator of children's books from 1924 to 1959 (Horne, 20th Century, pp 435). "She had a delicate touch in her line drawing. She was the first illustrator of the "Professor Branestawn" character In Merry-go-Round magazine. She also conributed to the Joy Street book series and Wonder Book. Also see Peppin. This is, as far as we know, her one-and-only deluxe limited edition. Baumgarten (2004) lists just eight books by Watson, done between 1926 and 1939, which include Big Book of Fairy Stories, Gallery of Children, and Our Old Fairy Stories. Signed by Walter de la Mare.
