About This Item

Toronto. McClelland and Stewart. 1977. Oblong folio. 35x 45cm, the first limited edition, this being #72 of 135, 240p. With two Original colour lithographed portraits of Thomson by Town, signed and numbered in pencil by the artist, 185 mounted coloured illustrations after Thomson, 81 uncoloured illustrations, most after or of Thomson, bound in brown reversed calf by Zaehnsdorf limited, the upper cover and spine blocked in gilt, aqua blue silk endpapers, glassine wrapper, publisher's linen covered slipcase, signed by Town and Silcox, with an original lithograph "Portrait of Tom Thomson", fine. (ewc). "We intended this book to serve a double purpose: to mark the one hundredth anniversary of Tom Thomson's birth, and to celebrate the artist's talent. Athought Thomson is one of Canada's creative heroes, he is known by too few paintings and too many dark specul ations. There is a great deal written about how he died; our purpose is to show what he lived for" Preface, David P. Silcox.
