About This Item
The Grey Walls Press, London., 1949. First edition. Octavo. 264 pages. A novel. "The story of an author who was seduced by the devil into selling vacuum cleaner." The figure of author is based on Jaeger's friend and sometime lodger Julian Maclaren-Ross. Both writers, when they hit on hard times, became door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesmen. Jaeger's caricature caused a temporary rift between them. Maclaren-Ross had earlier written his novel Of Hunger and Love(1947) in which the main character Richard Fanshawe ekes out a living selling Sucko vacuum cleaners. Contemporary (1950) gift inscription on front free endpaper. Dustwrapper designed off-set onto spine. Edges spotted. Very good indeed in very good nicked and chipped dustwrapper a little defective at head of spine.
