Thomas Pennant's 1769 journey through Scotland was the first of his Tours to be published. His Tour in Scotland 1769, described the course of his journey from Edinburgh to the highlands and then back.However, far from confining his observations to natural history, Pennant's candid account ranged from topographic descriptions, botanic and geologic observations to snippets of history and commentary on local customs. Pennant's Tour in Scotland - followed by A Tour in Scotland, and Voyage to the Hebrides 1772 (1774) - did much to strengthen a growing perception of a common British identity, and served to make remote areas of the British Isles recognizable to southern readers.
