About This Item

Richmond, Virginia: Seventieth Infantry Division Association, 1989. Hardcover. Very Good. Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine; gilt lettering and division insignia on front cover. Boards show slight wear; spine a tad rolled. Interior is clean and unmarked. Illustrated. iii, 299 pages. A wartime history of the 70th Infantry Division, United States Army, 1943-1945. The division was activated in June 1943 at Camp Adair (Oregon), continued training at Fort Leonard Wood (Missouri), landed at Marseilles in December 1944, and were in combat for 86 days. Active in Alsace-Lorraine and Saarland, they spearheaded the Seventh Army's drive into Germany and were instrumental in stopping Operation Nordwind, Hitler's final offensive. The 70th also incorporated Task Force Herren (under Brigadier General Thomas W. Herren). The 70th was deactivated in October 1945 upon their return to the United States. The author, a combat reporter, and the photographer were both on the scene to witness much of the action described in this book. They traveled throughout the 70th area, talked with participants, and saw situation maps.
