About This Item

1840 1ed SLAVERY in CUBA Travels Abolitionist Turnbull Tobacco Sugar Coffee MAP

David Turnbull was a 19th-century abolitionist who is best-remembered for his anti-slavery voyage to Cuba in 1838. While in Cuba, where slavery was still legal, Turnbull was blamed for creating unrest and slave revolts which resulted in his being expelled from Cuba. His experiences spurred him to write his book 'Travels in the West' in which he denounces slavery in Cuba and discussed the 'controversies' he created in the Caribbean slave movement.

Turnbull also describes tobacco, coffee, and sugar plantations and the reliance on slave labor in the commerce and trade markets.
