First edition of James Bruce's expedition in Ethiopia!
James Bruce was an 18th-century Scottish voyager known primarily for his scientific discoveries in Ethiopia and Egypt. In 1768, Bruce set off from Alexandria into Ethiopia where he claimed to be the first European to find the source of the Nile River, unknowing that it had previously been found by Portuguese Jesuits.
This work includes descriptions of Ethiopian military and weapons, Abyssinian language and alphabet, Ancient Egyptian antiquities, frescoes, obelisks, and hieroglyphs, costumes and clothing, geography and topography of North Africa, and botanical findings.
This extremely rare 1790 English first edition was printed in five huge tomes. While the contents are highly desirable and scientific in nature, the impressive illustrations make this set a stunning work. The illustrations include folding maps and full-page engravings depicting flora and fauna specimens discovered by Bruce, sketches of buildings and architecture, and detailed maps.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
