Day & Son, Ltd, 1865. Hardcover. Good. Complete in two volumes. Lg 8vo. xvi, 360pp.; xvi, 275pp. Three quarter bound in contemporary leather. Marbled boards. Light wear and rubbing to extremities. Rubbing to hinges. Ex-library stamps and markings from Brookline Library. Tight binding. Both frontis are clean, beautiful fold-out maps. Volume I's frontis is a map of Rhodes and Volume II's frontis is the Coast of Caria. There are a few minor dampstains scattered throughout. Otherwise, interior pages are clean, unmarked, and in excellent condition. Filled with forty-one plates. <br><br>Credited with bringing the British Museum's ancient collections in line with continental European museums. C.T. Newton was an archaeologist and vase scholar, know for building major collections for the British Museum as Keeper of Department of Antiquities. Newton studied classical art from a scientific prospective and was one of the first to photograph archaeological sites and publish them. He also is known for discovering and excavating the remains of the mausoleum of Halicarnassus. Built for King Mausolas, this was one of the seven wonders' of the ancient world. <br> Please feel free to view our pictures of this fascinating set in excellent condition.
