Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Battuta (1304 – 1368/1369) Berber Maghrebi scholar and explorer, born in Tangier, Morocco. He travelled extensively, setting off in June 1325 on hajj to Mecca. He did not return to Morocco for 25 years, travelling through Iraq and Iran, Arabia, Somalia, Central Asia, India, South East Asia and China. "The original Travels of Ibn Battuta ranks highly amongst the masterpieces of Arabic geographical literature and is of great significance in understanding the history of the peoples inhabiting the Central Asian States."
